What AI visibility actually means

Why being recommended by ChatGPT is a different problem from ranking on Google, and what we measure instead.

Last updated 2026-07-30

When someone asks an AI assistant "what's the best CRM for a small law firm?", they get an answer — not ten blue links. Either your brand is named in that answer or it isn't. AI visibility is the measure of how often you are named.

This is not search ranking. There is no position 1 to win, no keyword you can own, and no single algorithm to optimise for. Four assistants can answer the same question four different ways, and the same assistant can answer it differently tomorrow.

What we actually do

We ask real AI assistants the questions your customers ask, using the same wording a customer would use. We record what came back: whether you were named, where in the answer, which competitors appeared alongside you, and which websites the assistant quoted as sources.

That last part matters more than most people expect. Assistants ground their answers in sources, and those sources are usually not your website.

What it can't tell you

AI answers are not deterministic. Ask the same question twice and the wording changes. We measure across many questions and several assistants so the pattern is meaningful even though any single answer is not.

It also cannot tell you how many people asked. Nobody publishes that. Treat visibility as a share-of-conversation measure, not a traffic estimate.
