llms.txt, explained

What it is, what it is not, and whether it is worth your time.

Last updated 2026-07-30

llms.txt is a plain-text file at the root of your site — yourdomain.com/llms.txt — describing what your business does and which pages matter. It is written for models rather than people.

Be realistic about it

This is an emerging convention, not a standard anyone is obliged to honour. No assistant guarantees it reads your llms.txt, and nobody should promise you it will move your score on its own.

It is worth doing anyway because it is one file and about ten minutes. It gives a model a clean, unambiguous description of your business instead of leaving it to infer one from marketing copy written to sound impressive.

What to put in it

Kartafla generates one from your site. Read it before you publish it: it describes your business, so any error in it is an error a model may repeat.
